A well-fitting custom sheitel starts long before the first knot is tied, and measurement is one of the inputs that matters most. Custom sheitel measurements are not paperwork alone: taken carefully, they give the workshop numbers it can reason from; taken loosely, they leave downstream decisions guessing. What follows covers the measurement work itself: what each point on our order form asks for, how to take each reading repeatably, where things go wrong, and how the numbers turn into cap decisions. The six points below are this manufacturer’s protocol as an example — supplier protocols may differ — and fit itself also depends on cap block choice, hair containment, construction details, tension settings, and wear testing.

Why Fit Starts With Numbers
The Principle
A custom cap is built for one set of numbers. Stock caps average across many heads and work acceptably for many wearers; a custom cap aims closer — and does so best when the measurements that defined it were taken the way the cap will be worn: snug, level, and consistent. Even then, final comfort also reflects construction choices and wear testing.
Stock sizing sorts heads into small, medium, and large bands by circumference, and for many wearers that is genuinely enough. The case for measurement grows where averages strain: heads that are narrow with height, wide with a short front-to-nape, or asymmetrical in the temple region. It also matters for diagnosis — if a wearer keeps repositioning her cap through the day, comparing her measurement record against the unit is one of the first checks worth making.
Numbers also travel. A set recorded once can inform later units for the same client, be pulled out when a fit question arises later, and be re-verified against the head if circumstances change — hair volume, scalp sensitivity, or hair loss among them. The Six Points, One by One
The six points below follow the protocol on our custom ordering page, laid out here as this manufacturer's order-form fields by example. Other suppliers may name, group, or count the points differently — treat any measurement sheet as one workshop's convention:

Circumference — the anchor number
Circumference is the best-known of the six — and a commonly mis-taken one. The tape follows the hairline exactly — not the eyebrows, not the crown's widest point — held snug like a fitted perimeter band. Two errors worth watching for: measuring over thick hair that will be tucked flat under the cap, and letting the tape ride up at the nape. Both tend to inflate the number, and an inflated circumference can translate into a cap that sits loose.
Front to nape — the comfort measurement
This path drives cap depth. A reading taken too long is associated with the classic slide-back pattern — front riding low while the nape lifts; too short, and the perimeter may press at the temples. The tape runs from the natural front hairline straight over the crown to the prominent bone at the nape's base, following the contour of the head rather than floating above it.
Ear to ear, forehead — the hairline measurement
Across the front of the head, this span sets how the front panel curves along the hairline. Taken too wide, the front stands away from the temples; too narrow, it presses. The endpoints are the front of each ear where the hairline turns — not the ear's widest point.
Ear to ear over the crown — the volume measurement
Over the top of the head, ear-top to ear-top, this number tells the workshop how tall to build the crown. Heads with high crowns need more dome than any circumference figure implies; skimping here is why some caps flatten the crown area and read tight even when the perimeter fits.
Temple to temple, back — the geometry measurement
Least famous and quietly decisive: this rear span determines whether the back panels fall straight down or need taper toward the nape. Combined with nape width, it shapes the whole rear of the cap — and when a unit gaps above the ears or folds at the back seam, this pair is among the first places to check.
Nape width — the finish measurement
The shortest measurement with the longest consequences for daily comfort: the nape panel must match the narrowest span of the hairline or the back edge rolls, gaps, or folds under collars. On heads with a high, narrow nape especially, this number influences whether the back edge settles cleanly under scarves and collars.
Technique
How to Take Them Properly
The protocol is short; the discipline is what makes it trustworthy. Taken together, the steps below are the routine we ask for on our order form to get numbers the workshop can build on — confirm with your own supplier what their protocol requires:
- Prepare the hair flat. Braid or flatten the wearer's hair the way it will sit under the cap — the measurements must capture the head the cap will actually meet, not the head as worn to the appointment.
- Seat the wearer naturally. Upright, relaxed, looking straight ahead. A tilted chin shifts the nape and crown points by surprising amounts.
- Use a soft flexible tape, in centimeters. Cloth tapes conform to the head; metal or stiff tapes bridge across curves and read long. Centimeters to the millimeter keep all parties on one scale.
- Snug, never tight. The tape should contact the head the way a fitted perimeter would. Wrapping with tension to "make sure it fits" can distort the readings enough to affect cap-fit decisions.
- Take each point twice. Taking each point twice gives you a consistency check for free. If readings disagree, take a third and keep the matching pair; if numbers still wander, the placement may be unstable — remeasure rather than average.
- Record immediately, with context. Write the six numbers down on the spot, with the date and any notes — hair volume changes, a recent haircut, scalp sensitivity. A remembered measurement is harder to reconstruct accurately later — write it down at the time.
One more habit worth borrowing from the workshop: photograph the tape in place for any reading you are unsure of. A photo of placement can settle questions later that numbers alone may not.
Diagnosis
Where Measurements Go Wrong
The failure patterns repeat across the orders we review:
- Measuring over styled hair. Volume that will be pinned flat under the cap adds centimeters to circumference and temple spans, producing the floating, migrating cap.
- Measuring a wig on a wig. Numbers taken over an existing sheitel or fall measure that unit, not the head — one error to avoid when self-measuring.
- Placing the nape point by feel. The nape endpoint is the bone at the base, not "where the neck bends today." Habit and posture move the bend; the bone stays.
- Averaging inconsistent readings. An average of a right reading and a wrong reading tends to remain wrong. Consistency checks exist to catch placement instability, not to be smoothed over.
- Recording once, ordering years later. Heads can change — hair volume, scalp sensitivity, hair loss. A measurement set that has aged a while deserves a verification pass before it sizes a new unit.
Context
Special Situations That Change the Tape
Significant hair loss or alopecia. When there is little or no hair, the hairline stops being a reliable landmark and scalp contour takes over: measurements follow the scalp's natural lines rather than where a hairline used to sit. Our custom program documents this as a distinct protocol; the pattern to guard against is ordering too large — measuring to a remembered hairline instead of the head that is there.
Falls and band falls. Partial units do not need the full six points — a fall starts behind the crown and its critical spans are the rear and nape trio: ear-to-ear over the crown, temple-to-temple back, and nape width, plus a note on where the wearer's own hair or band will carry the front. The full taxonomy of falls versus full sheitels decides which measurement set applies before any tape comes out.
Very fine or very thick underlying hair. Fine hair grips less, so the measurement should be taken snug and the cap specified with more generous grip materials — velvet or silicone perimeters rather than plain elastic. Thick hair can flatten more than expected; braid it down first so the perimeter is sized for what the cap will actually meet.
Wearers between sizes. When a client sits near a stock boundary — say, between our typical small and medium bands — the measurement sheet, not the size label, should make the call: a head narrow in the temples but long front-to-back reads "medium" by circumference but fits nothing off the shelf. That client is the custom program's reason for existing.

From Numbers to Cap Decisions
Measurements earn their keep when they change what gets built. On our order sheets, each number lands in a specific field:
- Circumference sets the perimeter length — and, when combined with the rear spans, whether the cap is cut with taper.
- Front-to-nape sets cap depth and front placement, the two values behind slide-back and pressure complaints.
- The two ear-to-ear paths set front curvature and crown height together — mismatched, they are why a cap fits the front but starves the crown.
- Temple-to-temple and nape width set the rear geometry: ear tab angle, panel taper, and nape contour.

For shop owners, the measurement layer is a customer-asset practice. A per-client file holding the numbers, their date, tape notes, and the cap decisions they produced can make future visits faster to specify — and gives fit questions something to be checked against: pull the sheet, compare, and you have evidence toward whether the head changed or the cap drifted from spec.
Three practices keep the file useful. Keep all clients on one consistent template so records stay comparable across staff and time. Re-verify when an order comes well after the last recorded measurement. Circumference and front-to-nape are manageable alone in a mirror, but the crown, temple, and nape points are hard to place consistently without help. If self-measuring is the only option, take each measurement twice in one session and again the next day; consistent repeats are a good sign, while numbers that wander suggest a second person should redo them.
One common cause is a front-to-nape length cut longer than the wearer's head, which drops the front low and lets the nape ride up until grip concentrates at two points. Ear-tab geometry that does not follow the temple angle can produce the same behavior. Fit involves several variables, so have the measurement set compared against the cap before concluding anything — and know that both of these causes can be corrected on the next unit.
Snug but not compressing: aim for contact the way a well-fitted cap perimeter would sit, without digging. Loose tape can add centimeters that may translate into a looser cap; tight tape can distort readings. When two readings differ, re-take them; if one is snug-but-comfortable and repeatable, record it.
Unusual dimensions — a very narrow nape, an extra-long front-to-nape, or high crown height — are where custom production can earn its cost. Send the numbers rather than rounding into a stock size; depending on the workshop, solutions such as adjusted depth, reshaped ear tabs, or a custom perimeter can be discussed against the specific figures.
